WHY I DECIDED TO BACK STEVE BENJAMIN
The Mayor's election is upon us--literally just hours away.
As you know, my background is in law enforcement, almost fifteen years, including time with the FBI. And my only purpose in running was to be an advocate for change. As a father of a young son, I have a special interest in public safety. I believe the time has come to crack down on gang violence and to get guns out of the hands of thugs. We ALSO need to stop the revolving door system of justice that puts known violent criminals back out on the streets to strike again and again and again.
However, during the course of this campaign, I made an important discovery. I learned that Steve Benjamin cares as deeply as I do about the need to reform our criminal justice system. On several occasions, the Mayor and I had a chance to talk at length about our ideas and what actions are needed to make Columbia safer.
The Mayor's election is upon us--literally just hours away. And friends keep asking me why I decided to withdraw from the race and endorse Steve Benjamin. It really all boils down to this: I came to the conclusion that joining forces with Steve Benjamin was the best possible way for me to help achieve the reform ideas I have been advancing throughout the campaign.
It soon became clear to me that the Mayor and I agreed on all the big issues, and I also came to admire his leadership. So, I had some soul searching to do. I made a tough decision. It made no sense to run for Mayor when you find yourself in agreement with the incumbent on the key issues. And I also came to admire the incumbent’s courage and the strength of his leadership. That's why I decided to back Steve Benjamin.
And now, the Mayor and I have joined forces to fight to make this City we both love safer for his little girls, my son and all the families of Columbia. Of course, it’s too late to get my name off the ballot. So, I’m asking all the folks who may have been thinking about voting for me to join me in supporting the re-election of Mayor Steve Benjamin. It's the right thing to do. And I respectfully ask you to join our team.
